What is Hypnosis?

There are many myths and misconceptions when it comes to hypnosis, mainly due to how it is represented in the media and on the TV. Hypnosis is not magic or some special state and it does not have the ability to control your mind. It does not put you to sleep and is not something that I am doing to you or something you go into or under. Hypnosis is a collaborative process that helps you to focus your mind, direct your attention, engage in your imagination whilst bringing together new ways of thinking, feeling and behaving helping you to seed your desired changes. Hypnosis is about engaging in a mindset that consists of expectancy - expect to respond automatically to my suggestions. Belief - believe in your ability to change. Imagination - engage with your imagination act ‘as if’ you are hypnotised. Commitment - commit the time and put in the effort needed to practice the skills you learn. Engage in the process, want to be “hypnotised” be fully involved, listen to and follow along with what I am saying, hypnosis is not a time to be ‘zonked out’ you are an active participant in the process, you have full control of how you respond. Hypnosis helps you to engage with your inner strength and resources to achieve your goals and the lifestyle that you desire. Hypnosis is a learnable skill and like anything in life it becomes better the more you practice it. Everyone experiences hypnosis differently you may feel a stillness in your body or a lightness or even a comfortable heaviness, it may be a feeling of deep relaxation which is often the case, but not a requirement as they have done studies that show hypnosis can be just as effective whilst doing physical activity. During hypnosis you will be fully aware of what is happening, where you are and you will be able to hear all other sounds that surround you.

Needle in arm with no pain or discomfort during self hypnosis.

Whilst training to be a hypnotherapist I remember the day we had to hypnotise ourselves using self hypnosis to numb our arm to the point where we could have a needle put through it without any feeling of it being done. This was a point on the course when we really got to see the true power of our minds and how well hypnosis can work. - Please do not try to do this at home

What to expect from our sessions?

Before your first session I will send you an induction form to get a little information regarding your reason for therapy and a little medical history to make sure hypnosis is a good course of treatment for you. On our first session together we will discuss your problem in more depth in order for me to formulate a treatment plan. I can answer any questions you may have and we can set out your therapeutic goal. We will then do some hypnosis combined with therapeutic techniques that will be advantageous to your issue. During hypnosis you will be sat upright in a chair rather than lying down as this is more beneficial for keeping you alert and engaged which is important to the efficacy of hypnosis. After the session we will debrief and you will have the opportunity to discuss how you feel about the session, ask any more questions, discuss the number of seasons needed and we can set any ‘homework’ assignments for you to complete between sessions. This may be practicing the techniques we did during the session using self hypnosis, as many of the techniques benefit form repetition. (How to do this will be thoroughly explained on the day.) Or it may come in the form of recording thoughts or behaviours. Performing these tasks will benefit you and increase the probability of a successful therapeutic outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at  lucy@salisburyhypnotherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Everyone experiences hypnosis differently. Hypnosis is not some special state or sleep that you go into, you do not need to feel like you are ‘zonked out’ hypnosis is a way of focusing the mind. We naturally go in and out of this focus every day, just like when you are driving along a motorway and you are so absorbed in the experience, within a blink of an eye you have arrived at your destination. Or when you are deeply absorbed in a book or a film, things are going on around you and you are aware of them but your focus is completely on the TV or book.

Definitely not! You will have full control and awareness of what you are doing. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process and you will have total freedom to choose how you respond to suggestions. No one can control your mind except you! Hypnotherapy is nothing like you see with stage hypnosis.

Yes of course the aim is for you to be able to make beneficial changes and to learn skills and techniques so we want you to remember and learn as you go.

No! Hypnosis is a way of focusing the mind to help you become more receptive to suggestions and you are free to stop that focus at any time.

Yes anyone can be hypnotised if they go into it with the attitude of wanting to be hypnotised, engaging in it fully, listening and following along to the instructions I give and using your imagination as best you can. Hypnosis is a learnable skill and like anything in life it will become better the more you practice it.

No you are in control and only have to share during consultation and hypnosis as much as you are comfortable sharing. Sometimes during hypnosis I might ask you to describe a scenario and rate how it makes you feel but you will have full awareness over what you are doing and saying.

Hypnotherapy is not recommended for children under the age of 5. It is also not suitable for some conditions and disorders, such as people with schizophrenia, psychosis or epilepsy. Before your initial session you will be asked to complete an induction form and give medical details to make sure there are no contraindications for hypnosis.

This depends on you and your reason for therapy. Research shows that 4 - 6 sessions for more long term goals is highly recommended. Although some issues such as stopping smoking can be achieved in less. My aim is to help you learn the skills you need and for you to be able to apply self hypnosis so you are equipped to carry on setting and achieving your goals yourself rather than spending years having therapy.

Yes! Hypnotherapy has been found to be effective for pain relief and weight reduction. Research has shown that it increases the effectiveness of CBT for mood disorders. It has also been shown that it is highly beneficial for many issues including IBS, Insomnia, Smoking Cessation and when used in surgery. The effectiveness of the treatment can rely on your commitment to the process and practicing the skills and techniques between sessions as many of the techniques work better with repetition.
